Artist’s Statement

My art is usually defined by how I use my works as a way to explore an emotion or thought that I’m having. I specifically use art to convey how I feel about the experiences I have had in my life. By creating a piece that I can put my feelings into, I usually end up with a better product than if I had made something which I wasn’t attached to emotionally. It also functions as a coping mechanism which allows me to process the things that happen in my life.

To me, the art I make is more of an expedition than a message. Often when making a piece, I feel as though I am traveling through the perspectives and messages of the art, rather than telling someone else about them. I sometimes use symbols that I feel represent parts of my life. For example, I often use deer as a symbol of grief or loss, because I heavily associate deer with my personal experience in losing my step father.

The main things of note about what I create are the range of feelings I experience while making them, as well as the emotions that can be felt when looking at them. While the mediums and subject matter in my pieces vary, they usually feature vivid colors, high contrast, and some aspect of the natural world which represents an outlook or worldview that I find myself in at the time of its creation.
